In this webinar, Brandon Q. Mercado, Ph.D. will explore the comprehensive support for the advancement of structural science provided by The Chemical and Biophysical Instrumentation Center in the Chemistry Department at Yale University. His facility is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including single crystal X-ray diffractometers, powder diffractometers, small/wide-angle X-ray scattering systems, and micro-computed tomography (microCT). These resources enable scientists to conduct detailed analyses of crystalline structures, powders, and complex materials, facilitating a broad range of scientific investigations. Additionally, he is excited to announce the upcoming addition of an electron diffractometer, which will further enhance our capabilities. Brandon will share preliminary results obtained in collaboration with Rigaku and discuss the relevance to ongoing research projects, demonstrating the potential to obtain high-resolution, impactful structural data with electron diffractometers. This presentation aims to highlight the pivotal role his core facility plays in supporting cutting-edge structural science, fostering innovation, and driving scientific discovery within the university setting.

Brandon Q. Mercado, Ph.D.

Biography:

Brandon Q. Mercado, Ph.D., is an accomplished X-ray crystallographer and lecturer at Yale University, where he has been a vital part of the Department of Chemistry for over a decade. With the Chemical and Biophysical Instrumentation Center (CBIC), he oversees the use of advanced analytical instruments crucial for research in structural science.

Dr. Mercado's expertise lies in determining the spatial arrangement of atoms within crystals, which is essential for understanding the atomic structures of new compounds. His work supports a wide range of research projects within the university, helping scientists definitively establish the identities of the molecules they synthesize. In addition to his research, Dr. Mercado is dedicated to teaching, offering courses such as "Theory of Small Molecule Crystallography" and "Structure Refinement of Small Molecule X-Ray Crystal Structures," which combine instruction in theoretical topics with practical lab experience.

Brandon Mercado earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of California, Davis, where he focused on crystallography with Profs. Marilyn M. Olmstead and Alan L. Balch. He pursued postdoctoral research at The University of California, Irvine, exploring nanoparticle thin films with Prof. Matt D. Law. His research has been widely published, and he is known for his contributions to high-impact scientific studies. He remains dedicated to advancing structural science and mentoring the next generation of chemists through both his research and teaching roles at Yale University.
