What is Halogen Analysis?

Halogen elements belong to Group 17 of the periodic table and include fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I). Materials and products containing these elements are widely used in daily life. However, halogen elements can have negative impacts on industry and the environment. For this reason, halogen analysis is essential in incoming inspections and quality control during manufacturing. In facilities that handle large numbers of samples, fast and simple halogen analysis methods are particularly important.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is one of the most effective techniques for halogen detection. It enables powders and liquids to be measured directly without complex sample preparation, making it ideal for chlorine analysis. A sample preparation time of about 5 minutes followed by a 10-minute measurement is often sufficient to obtain stable and reliable results, regardless of the operator’s level of expertise. Moreover, XRF covers a wide concentration range, allowing chlorine to be quantified from as low as 1 ppm up to high concentrations (mass% levels or higher) without pre-concentration or dilution.

Since instrument contamination is relatively low, maintenance is simple, and XRF can be confidently used even by beginners in halogen analysis.
