FlatBlank
Automatic Baseline Drift Correction
STAvesta features an innovative FlatBlank function that fully automates blank correction. This function intelligently adjusts data to produce a flat baseline—without the need for manual intervention. Even during continuous measurements using the automatic sample changer (ASC), individual blank measurements are no longer necessary. The correction process is automatically completed before each measurement, allowing smooth transition into continuous operation. Tedious and time-consuming adjustments are now a thing of the past.
When TG or DSC baselines drift during temperature ramps due to instrument-related effects, FlatBlank uses an empty pan to perform a blank measurement, correcting any fluctuations caused by the instrument. FlatBlank records up to 15 data points (TG and DTA values) during the adjustment measurement and generates a correction curve using a fourth-degree polynomial. This curve is then applied to flatten the baseline of subsequent blank data. Since FlatBlank automates the entire process—from adjustment to blank measurement—once enabled, users only need to review the results after the run. For systems equipped with ASC, FlatBlank automatically performs a correction before the start of a measurement series, ensuring reliable continuous operation. In addition, the system includes a pre-adjustment aging function that helps further stabilize the baseline, contributing to even more accurate and consistent results.

Previously, the adjustment process required manual operation of the instrument at every step, demanding constant human supervision. As a result, most of the 4-to-6-hour adjustment time had to be scheduled during regular working hours, often disrupting other tasks. With the introduction of the FlatBlank function, once the adjustment is initiated, it proceeds automatically without further user intervention. This allows for unattended operation during off-hours—such as overnight—making it possible to use daytime hours more effectively and significantly enhance operational efficiency.
