11st : How Can Thermal Analysis Be Used in the Ceramic Firing Process? (3): Atmosphere-Controlled Thermal Analysis

Atmosphere-controlled thermal analysis is increasingly important for ceramics and metal sintering applications.

Modern ceramics are frequentlyfired in a wide variety of controlled atmospheres to achieve material properties optimized for specific applications; therefore, thermal analysis testing under these atmospheric conditions is required.

Firing under special atmospheres is also commonly used for metal injection molded (MIM) parts not just ceramics. For example, a reducing atmosphere may be used to prevent oxidation, debinding may be performed in a humidity atmosphere to reduce carbides, and in more complex cases, the atmosphere may be changed depending on the firing temperature range. Some of the latest thermal analysis instruments are capable of performing measurements under such a wide variety of atmosphere-controlled conditions.
