9th : How Can Thermal Analysis Be Used in the Ceramic Firing Process? (1)

Thermal analysis helps optimize ceramic firing by separately evaluating debinding and sintering processes.

The ceramic firing process can be divided into two main stages:

  1. the debinding process, and
  2. the sintering process.

For the debinding stage, TG-DSC or TG‑DTA is typically used, making it possible to evaluation of the debinding temperature, decomposition rate, and the amount of residue remaining from added binders. For the sintering stage, TMA is used to monitor the shrinkage behavior during sintering, making it possible to determine the required sintering temperature and how much shrinkage occurs during the process.

By understanding these reaction temperatures, one can determine based on thermal analysis results which temperature ranges allow for rapid processing and which require a slower reaction rate, thereby obtaining valuable information for reducing the costs associated with firing conditions.
