Cryo-transfer sample holder

Electron diffraction requires data collection under high-vacuum conditions. In order to protect hydrated or solvated compounds from degradation, specimen transfer into the instrument under cryogenic conditions is mandatory. Using the Gatan Elsa Model 698-STP cryo-transfer sample holder, a sample grid is cooled to liquid-nitrogen temperature prior to insertion, and transferred into vacuum in a protected dry environment. Furthermore, the holder enables measurement at low temperature, which often prolongs the lifetime of radiation-sensitive compounds in the beam.
