Individual particles in capsules and tablets can be scanned using X-ray CT to a high resolution. This high-resolution scan reveals multiple coatings and voids inside of this less than 500-micron size particle. Defects of the coating with a small inclusion are observed in this example. The coating thickness distribution and volume percentage of the voids can be calculated from the scan.
